Description
I used to think of a cactus growing only in a desert or rocky region in the Southwest. So, I was surprised and intrigued to discover that Opuntia Humifusa (prickly pear cactus) can grow almost anywhere, even in my cooler northern climate.
Every June, this plant becomes covered in clusters of the most beautiful yellow flowers, appearing to glow in the sunlight. Sadly, it blooms for only a short time, lasting but a few weeks.
Hundreds of long, sharp spines suggest a look, but don't touch warning for on-lookers; while two boulders stand like sentries offering further protection.
I decided to paint "Guarded Beauty" as an effort to capture the beauty of these delicate-looking waxy blossoms for year-round enjoyment.
