Description
"Cecilienhof Palace" --Site of the Potsdam Conference of 1945
--Original Photograph by Doug Kreuger
Officially the Berlin Conference, held in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany, took place from July 16 to August 2, 1945. Attended by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, US President Harry Truman and Soviet Leader Josef Stalin.
The issues discussed were:
1) Allied control of defeated Germany
2) Reparations
3) The Oder-Neisse Line (rivers boundary between Germany and Poland)
4) Russia joining the war in the Far East.
I remember feeling a sense of awe, standing in the same room where these 3 world leaders once sat, listening to our tour guide tell us about the important decisions that were made, pertaining to the look of a post-war Germany.
After the conference ended, Soviet troops used the palace as a clubhouse. In 1952 It was handed over to the state of Brandenburg. The government of Eastern Germany also used the palace as a reception venue for state visits. The rest of the complex became a hotel in 1960.
Today, parts of Cecilienhof Palace are still used as a hotel, and as a museum. In 1990 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site called Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin.
