Description
"Magical Garden"
Is a digital painting depicting yellow moonflowers opening up at night. Also called evening primrose, this unique flower blooms in the evening and closes by morning.
When I was growing up, my mother always had moonflowers in her gardens. During the daytime, the variety my mother grew, resembled dandelions. Consequently, they were sometimes accidentally pulled while weeding.
As young children, it was fun to watch these magical flowers opening as it began to get dark outside. Sometimes we had races to see who's flower would open the fastest! To help speed the opening, we would cup our hands around a bud, taking peeks at their progress. After we discovered there was a pushrod hidden inside the hollow stem, which assisted the opening and closing, it furthered our fun!
Fond childhood memories make moonflowers as much a part of summer fun as catching fireflies and searching for four-leafed clover! That's why, if you look closely, you will find these items also present in this painting.

Doug---it is almost that time again---for fireflies! If they are like all the other 'critters' this year--we will have a bumper crop! This is a great reminder---lvf
Doug Kreuger replied:
Many Thanks Nava! I recently thought about chasing fireflies with my grandkids, again, when I came across a large jar with a perforated lid, stored in my garage from last summer's catch. 🐝

Back to say---that I have never seen fireflies/lightning bug this big--or this many. I remember my mother talking about what they were like when she was a child. This must be approaching that---it is magical. There was a time I was chasing them with my camera---now I am just watching them.
Doug Kreuger replied:
Nava, Our fireflies mostly measure between 1/2" to 5/8" in length. Of course, they appear larger when lit. Some summers we see many more fireflies/lightning bugs than others. When I was growing up, my dad told us laboratories paid money for fireflies. Consequently, all of us neighbor kids spent many summer evening hours catching these elusive flying bugs, while our parents sat around on a patio talking and drinking. I don't know if the laboratory part was true or not, but I had fun running around with my friends after dark. Today, I enjoy helping my young grandkids chase there own firefly making memories.

Doug--this is a cheerful--and fun painting--looking forward to fireflies---could be anytime now---lvf
Doug Kreuger replied:
Thanks Nava! A flashlight in a flower garden at night can provide a special experience—especially with grandchildren! I hope fireflies here are more plentiful than they were last year.

Simply beautiful! You have really captured the magic of childhood. Oh how I remember chasing fireflies! Such delightful memories!! V/F
Doug Kreuger replied:
Thank you very much Renee! For whatever reason, fireflies have not been as plentiful the last couple summers?

So very beautiful Doug; I love these little yellow gems and the detail that you have presented here is incredible - totally different from my Datura which I also call Moonflowers as they open at dark and close at daylight - I love the little fire-fly over to the left and wonderful four-leaf clover to the right....the colors are so complimentary and just ooze positive energies....what a fun and beautiful, awe inspiring artwork my friend! Doug Kreuger replied:

Beautiful image Doug, and I love your Summertime fun memories, some are very similar to mine :)) Love that little firefly and I hope your 4 leaf clover brings you lots of luck :))...v/f
Doug Kreuger replied:
Thanks so much Donna! I certainly have been blessed with a good share of Luck!! My daughter who lives in Texas was visiting in July and found an even rarer 5-leaf clover!! She wasn't even searching… it just sort of caught her eye!
