Description
''Pontiac GTO'' By Doug Kreuger
Motor Trend Magazine's 1968 Car of the Year
This artwork is my second effort towards capturing the mystique surrounding America's motoring love affair with its classic cars.
Featured in this artwork is the iconic Pontiac GTO emblem, prominently displayed over a black 1968 GTO Series 242.
Superb safety, elegant styling and racing performance are just a few of the reasons this muscle car became so popular. Dual exhaust, sporty suspension, redline tires, bucket seats, hideaway headlights, and twin hood scoops added to its desirability.
The first generation Pontiac GTO was a true muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is considered by many to have popularized this motoring trend.
The letters GTO originated from the Italian term, Gran Turismo Omologato. Translation: Grand Touring class production vehicle for racing. Pontiac's GTO stood for Grand Touring Option. Inspired by the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, a successful racecar, regarded by many experts to be the ultimate classic car.
