Description
“American Bison” by Landscape Artist, Doug Kreuger
My inspiration for creating this artwork came from my family’s South Dakota heritage, and a request from my son to create a design that could be used as visual reference by a tattoo artist who tattooed this artwork on my son’s upper left arm.
Symbolic of America’s Great Plains, bison are often called buffalo. Regardless of its naming, these imposing beasts are among the heaviest land animals native to North America.
Some adult bison stand up to 78” tall at the shoulder, and can weigh over 2,000 pounds. Despite their massive size, bison can run at speeds up to 40 miles an hour when necessary.
A bison’s curved pointed horns can grow to a length of 2 feet. Together with its massive head, these prairieland giants can appear intensely formidable, though, some people mistakenly see these animals as nonthreatening.
Bison once roamed much of North America, and were of great important to the survival of early Native Americans.
By the early 1800s, western frontiersmen began killing bison for food, hides & sport—depriving great Indian tribes of this all-important resource. The once enormous buffalo herds were eventually reduced to only a few hundred animals.
Thanks to strict animal protection laws, bison numbers have somewhat rebounded. Today approximately 500,000 bison live on preserves and privately owned ranches.
The large bird depicted here (at my son’s request) represents a California Condor --- one of the largest, and rarest of all North American Birds. California Condors were once found in much of the Western United States until their numbers declined to near extinction. (Similar to the plight of the American Buffalo.) As of 2018 there are roughly 450 condors known to be living in the Western United States.
