Description
"My Blue Iris"
The iris flower gets its name from the Greek word for “rainbow” ---Very fitting, since they come in such a wide spectrum of colors----the most popular varieties being dark blue and purple. These colors represent royalty, whereas yellow irises can convey passion.
With a history dating back to Ancient Greece, irises have been given special meanings, the primary being: Faith, Hope, Wisdom, Courage and Admiration.
The Greek Goddess Iris (messenger of the Gods and the personification of the rainbow) was believed to be a divine link between Heaven and Earth. Hence, purple irises were often planted over the graves of women to summon the Goddess Iris to guide the dead on their journey into the afterlife.
During the Middle Ages, irises were associated with the French Monarchy, and the Fleur-de-lis (a stylized iris) evolved to become symbol of France.
Today, irises can be found all around the globe, and is the State flower of Tennessee, while the Fleur-de-lis has become the emblem for the city of New Orleans.
Hardy, easily grown and propagated, this particular one grows in my own yard in northeastern Illinois, along with a dozen other color varieties.
